
Avalanche Skills Training
Avalanches are the single greatest hazard facing the winter backcountry traveller. The knowledge you will gain from a Revelstoke Alpine Adventures avalanche course will assist you in making better decisions in avalanche terrain.
Our avalanche courses are taught by experienced professional guides and are held in the Revelstoke area. This combination of experienced instructors and the great terrain of the Selkirks and Monashees will ensure that you will have an exceptional learning experience.
We combine the Avalanche Skills Training 1 (AST 1) course curriculum with an addtional two days of training to round out the Intro to Ski Touring Course. Check the combined courses tab below for more info.

Avalanche Skills Training Level One (AST 1)
This is an introductory two and a half day avalanche course and is a “must do” for anyone venturing into the backcountry. Classroom sessions and 1.5 field days give participants a good grounding in basic avalanche phenomena and safe mountain travel. Our avalanche courses are taught by certified ACMG guides and follow the curriculum established by the Canadian Avalanche Center.
The Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 Course provides an entry-level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available.
The AST level 1 is the prerequisite for the AST level 2 and for continued training in professional and industrial avalanche courses offered by the CAA.

$ 260.00 + 5% GST per person/minimum 6 participants
Options
Participants in the AST 1 can now enrole in the Mountain Skills Course. This is a great introduction to basic skills such as trip preperation, map and compass skills, basic gps use, whiteout navigation, route finding, glacier travel and crevase rescue. Course Objectives
- Understand the basics of avalanche formation and release.
- Identify avalanche terrain.
- Know the steps required to plan and carry out a trip.
- Find resources for obtaining Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins if these are not available.
- Use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain.
- Carry out a companion rescue.
- Understand the limits of their training.
Prerequisites
Participants must possess at least intermediate skiing or boarding skills.
This means being able to make basic parallel turns in most conditions and terrain and at least being able to kick turn and sidestep away from terrain that is “over your head”.
Location
The AST 1 course is based out of Revelstoke with field days at Rogers Pass or other local touring venues.
Equipment List
- Backpack* - 30 to 40 litre, if snowboarding then it must have a system to hold your snowboard and snowshoes
- Touring skis, telemark skis or snowboard boots, poles, skins, avalanche beacon, shovel and probe*
- Gore-Tex jacket or similar
- Pants - suitable for touring up
- Warm clothing- fleece jacket
- Warm hat
- sun hat, light weight - ball cap
- Sunglasses and Goggles
- 2 pairs gloves/mitts, a light weight pair for touring up and a warmer pair
- Sunscreen and lip balm
- 1st aid - limited to personal medications (epinepherine if you have allergies) (your guide will have a 1st aid kit) etc.
- Misc. personal items - camera
- water bottles and/or thermos, 1 - 2 litres
- lunch and snacks
*Skiis, boots, skins, pack, beacon, shovel and probe can all be rented locally. Contact us for pricing and to reserve these items.

Backcountry Avalanche Awareness booklet 7th ed., Avaluator™, Avalanche Danger Descriptor card, resource information and list and completion certificate.
Not included
Food, accommodation, transportation, personal clothing and equipment, avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel, park passes.

Avalanche Skills Training Level Two (AST 2)
This four day course picks up where the AST 1 left off. With 3.5 field days and 8 hours of classroom time this course will assist you developing intermediate decision making skills for the backcountry.

Goals
The Avalanche Skills Training Level 2 Course will provide an intermediate level decision-making framework that is:
- Based on the most advanced knowledge available.
- Suitable for use by people with a moderate degree of training and experience.
Objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Be familiar with Avalanche Danger Ratings verification techniques for personal use on a local scale.
- Be familiar with the ATES technical model as a means to develop personal, local terrain ratings.
- Use routefinding to take advantage of nuances in terrain to manage personal risk.
- Use travel techniques in avalanche terrain appropriate to the avalanche conditions.
- Proficiently carry out a companion rescue.
- Understand the limits of their training.
